Last-Minute Summer Getaway Ideas Before School Starts
It’s hard to believe, but the first day of school will be here in no time. It’s no surprise that summers seem to be over in an instant, but there’s still time to take advantage of the time off. If you’re looking to get in one last family getaway before the bell rings, there are still some options. Consider avoiding the big-name locations in Northern California and instead opt for some more laid-back spots that are all within just a few hours of Sacramento. Following are some of our top spots for last-minute getaways before school starts.
Dunsmuir
Considered one of the most picturesque small towns in Northern California, Dunsmuir sits at the base of Mt. Shasta. There are outdoor activities galore, including Hedge Creek Falls, where you can take an easy hike to a cave, and Castle Crags State Park, where you can see stunning rock formations. Nearby McCloud Falls has a series of rushing waterfalls, accessed by hikes of varying lengths.
One of the most unique places to stay is Railroad Park Resort, where you can stay overnight in a refurbished railroad caboose. They also have cabins and campsites. Hungry? Pay a visit to the iconic Yaks on the 5, which serves hearty burgers and salads. Another great spot is The Wheelhouse, which has hundreds of games for kids and adults alike.
Alameda
San Francisco may get all the attention, but this city across the bay is a worthwhile destination in its own right. If you have a kiddo who’s into military history, a visit to the USS Hornet Museum is a must. You can tour the retired aircraft carrier and learn about its past missions. Nearby is the Alameda Naval Air Museum, which has models and displays about naval aviation. Another cool museum in Alameda is the Pacific Pinball Museum, which has nearly 100 playable games! If you need to get out for some fresh air, consider a visit to the Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach, where you can picnic, swim and paddle to your heart’s delight.
There are a few hotels in Alameda, but with a family in tow, perhaps the best option is to rent an Airbnb or VRBO. If you’re looking for a laid-back spot to hang out, Almanac Beer is a family-friendly spot with food trucks and a sandbox. Another good bet is Tomatina, which serves pizza and pasta and offers family meals.
Calistoga
With its rolling vineyards and world-renowned wineries, Calistoga is usually considered an adults-only destination. But there are plenty of family-friendly activities here that often get overlooked. For starters, Safari West is just minutes away, where you can see giraffes, zebras, and other African animals. They even offer overnight stays in luxury tents imported from Botswana! Another fun attraction for kids in Calistoga is Old Faithful Geyser, which erupts several times an hour. There’s also an animal farm and picnic grounds onsite. A family-friendly winery to check out is Castello di Amorosa, a castle-like structure that offers grape juice and coloring sheets to the little ones.
As far as lodging, there are numerous options in Calistoga depending on your style. Calistoga Motor Lodge and Spa offers unique camper rooms; you can even bring your dog! You can even camp at nearby Bothe-Napa Valley State Park, which has yurts and hiking trails.
Morro Bay
If you’re looking for the ultimate coastal getaway (and hoping to escape from the valley heat), Morro Bay is a great choice. Morro Strand State Beach has miles and miles of sandy shoreline as well as its namesake Morro Rock. You can even go horseback riding on the beach! Other nearby activities include kayaking, biking, and surfing. Or, you can stroll the quaint downtown area, browse the shops, and enjoy a fresh seafood meal at one of the many restaurants.
A central place to stay in Morro Bay is Beach Bungalow Inn and Suites, which is walking distance to town and has bike rentals, a fire pit, and free breakfast. Another option is the Inn at Morro Bay, a bayfront property with a pool and onsite restaurant.
Russian River
The Sonoma Coast gets most of the attention, but just east of Jenner is the Russian River Valley, a winding waterway through redwood forest. Along the way are swimmable beaches, charming small towns, and lush hiking trails. Some family-friendly beaches to check out include the aptly-named Mom’s Beach in Forestville and Johnson’s Beach in Guerneville, which has kayaks, inner tubes and beach chairs for rent, plus a snack bar. Another fun outing near the Russian River is Sonoma Zipline Adventures, where you can zip through the treetops or walk across skybridges. They also have a treehouse available for overnight stays. You can also explore the redwoods from terra firma at Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve, which has hiking trails and picnic facilities.
One of the most unique places to stay along the Russian River is AutoCamp in Guerneville. Here, you can rent an Airstream trailer or glamping tent for the night, listen to live music, even take a yoga class. Further upstream, Cottages on River Road has a swimming pool and nightly campfires.
Amador County
Amador County, nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills, offers a delightful escape just a short drive from Sacramento. Rich in Gold Rush history and boasting picturesque landscapes, it’s a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
Visit the charming town of Sutter Creek, known for its boutique shops, wine tasting rooms, and vibrant arts scene.
