How to Celebrate Dad This Father’s Day

Father’s Day falls on June 21 this year, but what to do for dear old dad? Many events and activities are cancelled this year due to social distancing guidelines, but that doesn’t mean you can’t give dad the shoutout he deserves.

Although Father’s Day might look a bit different this year due to COVID-19, there are still plenty of ways to show dad you care. If you live in the same household, you can plan to spend the day together or go out for a special meal at one of the many restaurants that are now open for in-person dining. Or, if you’re a DIYer, you can even make dad a handmade gift to celebrate!

Take to the Water

Treat dad to an afternoon on the Sacramento River with a special Father’s Day River Cruise. Departing from Old Sacramento, the one-hour cruise features a narration on the nature and history of the river, providing unique views of the downtown skyline. Safety precautions are in place, and due to social distancing guidelines, seatings are limited so make your reservations now!

For a unique experience this Father’s Day, why not take dad on a guided tour of the countryside in Yolo County using pedal power? The Sacramento RiverTrain has launched railbike tours starting in West Sacramento, where visitors ride a special four-wheeled bicycle along the tracks near the Sacramento River, passing farms and orchards along the way. There are three rides per day for the 15-mile, one-and-a-half-hour excursion, and safety guidelines will be in place.

Indulge in Some Barbecue

At Urban Roots, you can reserve your spot (six feet apart of course) to sample some house-brewed beer and indulge in stick-to-your-ribs barbecue like brisket and pulled pork. Tank House in Midtown serves baby back ribs and hot links, and is offering in-house dining on a first-come, first-served basis. Back Forty Texas BBQ in Shingle Springs is also open with limited seating, and reservations are recommended.

Have Beer Delivered to Dad’s Doorstep

While many craft breweries in the greater Sacramento area are offering to-go growlers and cans, some have taken the next step and are offering beer deliveries! With several locations in Sacramento, including Midtown and the Pocket area, Device Brewing Company offers weekly deliveries throughout the greater Sacramento area. Other craft breweries that deliver include Fort Rock Brewing in Rancho Cordova, Crooked Lane Brewing in Auburn, and Bike Dog Brewery in West Sacramento. If cider is more dad’s speed, Two Rivers Cider Company also offers delivery on their hard ciders, with flavors like cherry and pineapple.

Take a Hike

If your dad is the outdoorsy type, why not give him a dose of nature this Father’s Day by taking him on a hike? Many trails are now open throughout the greater Sacramento area, ranging from urban walking paths to backcountry treks. It’s recommended that visitors stay within their own county and practice social distancing. Some places to consider are Quarry Trail in Placer County, Blue Heron Trail in Sacramento County, Horsetail Falls Trail in El Dorado County, and Putah Creek Trail in Yolo County.

Make Him a Gift

There’s no better way to express your love than a heartfelt, homemade gift. No matter your level of “craftpertise,” there’s bound to be a project that you can easily tackle. How about a DIY wooden beer caddy, complete with a bottle opener on the side? Or a monogrammed beer mug using etching cream and stencils found at any craft store. You can even get the kiddos involved with gifts like these homemade photo blocks via I Heart Craft Things.
